About
Rumi Smith - Associate Director
How can I help you and your institution or organization?
Once upon a time I was a political activist working in the areas of housing, civil rights, education and support for working people.
Then I was an arts activist, running a theater for a decade engaged in national and international discussions of cultural democracy.
The digital media revolution came to my world in the late eighties and my colleagues and I evolved a method of practice around helping people tell multimedia stories, we called it digital storytelling.
Those methods and models led me and my organization, StoryCenter, to 90+ countries, 1000s of workshops and projects, and 10s of thousands of individual stories.
I retired in 2025 as Executive Director, but remain with StoryCenter in an emeriti role.
Which means my four decades of learning about story, society and social justice is available in a consultatory and residency-based context for all those that might be interested.
A graduate in Mass Media Communications, I specialize in video editing and narrative crafting, using digital storytelling to amplify voices that deserve to be heard. My academic and hands-on experience spans the full production process — from scriptwriting and storyboarding through post-production — working with tools including Adobe Premiere Pro, After Effects, and WeVideo to create content that connects with audiences.
My work also draws on a strong foundation in videography and photography, blending visual artistry with storytelling to document real experiences and evoke genuine empathy. Whether through personal projects or collaborative work, I'm driven by the opportunity to bring visibility to the people and stories that matter most.
